My computer sucks too, that's why I'm getting a whole bunch of parts for Christmas/Chanukah

I'm getting a Geforce FX video card, Soundblaster Live! audio card, new speaker, a new plasma monitor, and an extra 256 megs of RAM

RAM stands for Random-Access-Memory (I think). You know how when you play a CD game on your computer you see a loading screen? Well, the PC (or game system) is loading the information from the disk into the RAM. The more RAM you have, the faster and better the game will run.

The Geforce video card and all that will make my computer be able to handle complex 3-D graphics and realistic sound.

Ram's on fire! (meaning in form; sharp, witty etc)

Good idea, Slugger. Having 1/2 GB of RAM improves performance quite a lot: I have the 1/2 GB, and sometimes if I disable the swapfile and forget to turn it back on, my system still runs fine.

One more performance tip, sportsfans:
Defrag your HDD (hard drive)

defragging your hard drive is a given. However, if you have enough RAM you won't need to because ywhatever you constanrly use will stay in the RAM

True, but that only means that the swapfile won't be written to... much. The HDD will still need defragging sometimes s installing/uninstalling various progs, DLing whatever, will all cause fragmentation to varying degrees. You don't need to defrag often, I do it maybe three or four times a year. It does help speed things along, especially startups.

I have seen time and time again, friends who don't keep an eye on their systems, they have junk installed and running so the right hand of their taskbar is holding 10 or so icons... they are still running win 98 and have =>never<= updated drivers.

A modern computer's HDD can store more text than you could read in your lifetime. Keep an eye on things, uninstall unnecessary programs, Especially ones that run in the background. You don't need to be an Uber Nerd, just use common sense. I have found that making things as simple as possible leads to the fewest headaches.

I will also swear by using a second HDD as a backup for critical failiures can ocurr.

Gansterz, Are you serious? What CPU and video card do you have? 1.5 GHz is plenty of RAM for just about anything. Unless you're trying to crack a Quantum encrypted code, that is...

Actually, you'd be surprised Joe. Alot of recently made PC games require more than 1.5 ghz to run with even minimal performance.
