Momiji Fujimiya
Momiji is the younger Kushinada twin and was never told about her family history until recently. Although she has had some nasty shocks, her essential courage and determination have allowed her to recover quickly and become an important part of the TAC. She is naturally optimistic and never gives up hope for success, but is also awkward and somewhat accident prone, and suffers from anxiety about her appearance. Momiji has a deeply compassionate nature and will try to help anyone who seems to need it, (whether she likes them or not) even trying to restore the confidence of her detested rival Sakura and communicating with an Aragami that seems unusually peaceful. She will go to any lengths to protect others, always putting their safety before her own, as when she steps in to save Kusanagi. It takes her a long time to admit how she feels about him. Her initial reactions fluctuate between gratitude for his saving her life and slapping him for making comments about her underwear. She finally realizes that she loves him, however infuriating he may be.

The other members of the TAC are her close friends despite the age difference and she will do everything in her power to support them. At the beginning of the series she has no combat abilities, but shows a knack for turning the tide of a battle through her willingness to do what she can and keep up the morale of the team. She seems to be learning from her surroundings and has even proven herself able to handle Kome’s bazooka. Her mitama gives her the power to detect Aragami and track their movement. When close to Kusanagi, their combined powers allow them to fly and take on Aragami they might not be able to defeat otherwise.

Mamoru Kusanagi
As a baby, Kusanagi was implanted with seven blue seeds and taught to protect Kaede from being sacrificed by humans. His feelings for Kaede eventually overcame the brainwashing and he now fights the Aragami and keeps Momiji safe.

Although he desperately wants to maintain his tough guy image (he can’t stand being accused of being nice) this facade doesn’t entirely hide the teenager who seems to have had little or no contact with other people, even Kaede. Momiji appears to be the only person he has ever talked to much, but he seems to be developing a more or less friendly relationship with the TAC. He initially insists that all he wants is revenge, but eventually admits that he really likes Momiji.

Kusanagi has few social skills, but he seems to be a natural smart mouth, unable to resist a sarcastic remark on any occasion. He will often turn up for no particular reason except to tease Momiji, even making uninvited appearences at her window in the middle of the night. He will never let her forget her cartoon animal underwear and periodically checks to see which pair she has on. (we suppose everyone has to have a hobby) He seems used to her calling him a jerk or a pervert, and to dodging when she slaps him. He also exchanges insults in a slightly less friendly vein with Sakura. He has an obsessive hatred of Murakumo and will attack him despite all the times he’s nearly been killed by him. His real obsession, however, is finding out why Kaede switched sides.

Kusanagi has incredible speed and agility and is able to regenerate rapidly from most injuries. He can also grow blades from his arms and a form of armor, as well as generating energy blasts.

Daitetsu Kunikida
The head of the TAC seems to know more about the Kushinada family than anyone else, and is dedicated to protecting Japan. He has also sworn not to allow either of the twins to be sacrificed.

Mr. Kunikida thought of Kaede as his daughter and was devastated by her apparent death. He tends to treat Momiji as a replacement daughter, but the revelation that Kaede has turned traitor shocks and disillusions him deeply. In general he seems to be a father figure to the entire TAC. He also has a tendency to make horrendous puns, capable of sending the entire team fleeing.

His relationship with the Japanese government is a difficult one, since he is afraid they may decide the situation is out of control and fall back on sacrificing Momiji. He works grimly to keep this from occurring and often pushes himself too far in his efforts to fight the Aragami.

Ryoko Takeuchi
The TAC’s second in command is an ex-policewoman and the team’s best marksman with her police revolver. She is elegant, calm, and professional, and often finds herself in the position of having to keep the less experienced members in line. However, she also has a lighter side, and an apartment full of stuffed animals.

Takeuchi uses her old police contacts to help the TAC whenever possible. Unfortunately, this often involves being trailed around by the lovestruck police officer Sugishita, who can’t get it through his head that she isn’t interested in him. She is interested in her boss, Mr. Kunikida, who tries not to notice because he feels he’s too old for her.

Azusa Matsu-Daira
Ms. Matsu-Daira is the mind behind much of the TAC’s high-tech weaponry. She is constantly looking for ways to stop the Aragami, from photosynthesis lasers to microbes. Her time is also spent in studying the biology of the Aragami and how the blue seeds work. (She has a brief conflict with Kusanagi over her conducting tests on Momiji.)

She appears rather quiet and ladylike, but has a dry sense of humor and is able to command respect from everyone. She has a young son, Jun, from a failed marriage, and worries that she is neglecting him because of her important work. She has been known to work in her lab all day and all night if no one stops her.

Koume Sawaguchi
Kome was transferred from the National Defence Agency (without her knowledge) and it’s easy to see why. She has a passion for heavy artillery of any kind, although her bazooka seems to be her favorite. In the NDA she was known as the Hurricane, probably for her tendency to indiscriminately blow up anything that gets in her way!

She seems to have a sort of big sister attitude towards Momiji and even tried to play matchmaker between Momiji and Kusanagi. Aside from target practice, her hobbies include beating up Yaegashi and having her fortune told. She also has a healthy appreciation of sake. Kome’s attitude towards the war against the Aragami can be summed up in her own words "High tech’s all right, but I prefer the old fashioned way!" (meaning bazookas, rocket launchers, etc.)

Yoshiki Yaegashi
The TAC’s computer expert has taken a long time to adjust to the transition from his job as an analyst at the Economic Planning Agency to the TAC, where he often finds himself involved in combat. At first he feels unsuited to the TAC but he learns to adapt with Momiji’s encouragement.

Yaegashi lives with his embarrassingly effusive mother and doesn’t seem to have much of a life outside his job. Despite his serious, businesslike appearance he has a penchant for adult video games and is the second person to take an undue interest in Momiji’s underwear. Along with computer work, his daily routine usually involves getting clobbered by Kome.

Sakura Yamazaki
This flamboyant priestess/exorcist has spent much of her life in America and has returned to fight the Aragami. She takes an immediate dislike to Momiji, who she perceives as stealing her spotlight, and calls her "sacrifice girl." She initially flirts with Kusanagi, but gives up when she realizes it isn’t getting her anywhere. Some of Sakura’s abrasiveness may be attributed to her difficult childhood. As a very young girl, she watched her mother be swallowed by an Aragami and has never entirely recovered from this event. She was ostracized for her powers and eventually recruited by agents of the U.S. government and taken to America. She fights the Aragami out of a desire for revenge for her mother and glory for herself.

THE VILLIANS

Murakumo
Kusanagi’s nemesis Murakumo has the eight mitama needed to fly and create massive energy blasts. He initially appears to eliminate Aragami who don’t live up to his exacting standards and badly injures Kusanagi in several battles. He blasts Kusanagi with gleeful malevolence, contemptuously referring to him as "imperfect soul". He arranges the ceremony that brings about the rebirth of Susana-O and travels the country with the infant god and Kaede, reawakening Aragami and cheerfully forecasting the end of the human race.

Kaede Fujimiya
The older Kushinada twin was long believed to be dead, but has recently returned to aid Susana-O. The members of the TAC remember her as a model child: neat, graceful, well mannered and a straight A student. Kaede seems to have been aware of Kusanagi’s presence (and had a crush on him) from an early age.

Kaede’s involvement with the Aragami appears to be a sort of holy mission to her: she believes the only way to purify Japan is to help Susana-O take over. She seems eerily indifferent to the consequences of her actions and has coldly severed her connection to her adoptive father.
